To mark the opening of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, the Digital Open Innovation Campus (DOIC) ®hosted its first metaverse-based opening event on April 24.
This initiative is part of the official participation program “TEAM EXPO”.
What is DOIC?
DOIC is a global platform that aims to build an open innovation ecosystem bridging academia, industry, and government.
Leveraging the international stage of Expo 2025, DOIC shares cutting-edge technologies from universities and public research institutions in Japan and abroad via the metaverse, the project promotes co-creation and value generation with a wide range of stakeholders, including companies, local governments, and researchers.
Over 40 organizations have already joined and support this initiative.
A Metaverse-Driven Experience
During the event, Vice President Oshima delivered an opening message highlighting the background and vision of the project.
A live stream from the Expo 2025 venue was also featured, creating an immersive experience that blended real and virtual worlds.
In addition, the event featured a variety of content such as the following, and conversations naturally emerged among participants—making it a truly immersive and interactive experience unique to the metaverse.
- Tips on avatar customization
- Virtual tours of featured booths
- Announcements on upcoming long-term activities such as the “Technology Co-Creation Tour” and “Open Call for Independent Events”
- Introduction to the official “Theme Week” program scheduled for September 20 (in-person)
Looking Ahead
DOIC will continue to expand through planned activities such as the Technology Co-Creation Tours, independent event hosting, and participation in Theme Week.
These programs aim to encourage wider participation and foster a vibrant network of spontaneous knowledge exchange and collaboration.
Beyond the Expo
DOIC will continue to evolve beyond the duration of the Expo, developing as a sustainable platform for co-creation. We aim to build a lasting innovation ecosystem that connects diverse stakeholders from Japan and around the world to address global social challenges.
