Institute of Science Tokyo – Komatsu Industry-Academia Collaboration Practical Application Award

Professor Yoshihiro Mizutani from the School of Engineering, Associate Professor Saiko Aoki from the School of Materials Science and Engineering, and Associate Professor Shinji Tanaka from the Institute for Advanced Research have been awarded the Institue of Science Tokyo – Komatsu Industry-Academia Collaboration Practical Application Award. This award is in recognition of their achievements in collaborative research with Komatsu, which led to the development of a new processing method that significantly improves the lifespan of gears used in large mining machines. They achieved this by elucidating the “compatibility” mechanism of manganese phosphate coatings on gears through this industry-academia collaboration.

Additionally, this project was developed and brought to practical application in collaboration with Komatsu’s Yukio Tamura, Keiji Matsumoto, and Kentaro Yamada, who also received the same award.

During the 20th Institue of Science Tokyo – Komatsu Industry-Academia Collaboration Research Report Conference, held on February 17 (Monday), Professor Yoshihiro Mizutani, Associate Professor Saiko Aoki, and Associate Professor Shinji Tanaka were presented with the certificate and a prize by Masaki Shinohara, Executive Officer and Deputy Director of the Development Division at Komatsu Ltd.
